I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates Little Britain, the skint man's Fast Show. Yes, Tom Baker's voiceovers are funny, but I'd gone off the secretary who fancies the PM by the second episode. Is it true he's still in the second series? Sheesh.
Help was inspired, fantastic to have Paul Whitehouse back on TV. My favourite ever interviewee - I met him and Charlie Higson for a "Me and my mate"-type feature for The Sunday People. When I played the tape back, it was an hour of Whitehouse doing comedy, me literally crying with laughter barely getting the odd question out. I've got a framed signed A4 poster of Whitehouse in character as "Brillliaaaant!" over my PC in my bedroom, actually.
I also have a photo of me with Ross Noble (with shaved head) as he compered my first stand-up gig.
Enough solipsism. Yes, series 5 of The Simpsons is astounding. I'd forgotten how many wonderful moments there are in the Cape Feare episode alone.
All-time funniest thing I've seen is Steve Martin's stand-up video from about '79. Everything he did up to and including Parenthood is comedy too wonderfully stupid to be from a normal human being.
Also Peep Show, Yes (Prime) Minister, Chris Morris, Derek & Clive, Fawlty Towers, Eddie Izzard, Billy Connolly, Mark Lamarr (very under-rated as a stand-up), Dylan Moran and the first two series of Black Books, first two series of Father Ted, Danny Baker's breakfast show, Early Doors, The Royle Family, The Smell Of Reeves & Mortimer, History Today from Newman & Baddiel, early Frank Skinner.
But not Dad's Army.

FINALLY!!! Somebody else remembers History Today as pure comic genius (AKA, When David Baddiel Was Funny). I remember Tuesday moirnings at school when we were recanting whole chunks of it:

"You know men who stick fruit up each other's bottoms?"
"Yes."
"Oh you do?"

I still catch people out with that one...

Early Doors

I forgot to put that. I also forgot to put The League of Gentlemen, which is unforgivable.

I'm surprised you only said series 1 & 2 of Father Ted. I felt the entire show built towards series 3, which rounded it all off brilliantly.

Also, We Are History.

Here's some comedy for you all-I passed my driving -*test*-('") today so my grandad insisted on giving me a lift to the pub, which I did and it was all wonderful and full of sunshine until I put the car back into the garage and bumped into a big plant pot at the back of the garage, and scratched the front bumper. I'm in hiding, hoping my parents won't notice until it's too late for them to work out where it came from.

This is why I wasn't as pleased as everyone else when I passed tongue.gif

Here's one I bet no-one remembers: Fist of Fun. They did a sketch with (real) vegetables acting out some of the parables from the Bible. I nearly killed myself, and I've never seen it since. Ah, memories...

Earls- 04-08-2005
I've got the Fist Of Fun book! All new material it were, too.

Rounded it off? Naw the last one in Series 3 made it look like it'd end but then it all works out happily in the end; they set it up for a fourth series perfectly. Bleh... sad.gif

Brass Eye, Spaced, I'm Alan Partridge, Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partidge, The Day Today, On The Hour, Today With Richard Not Judy, The Adam and Joe Show, Father Ted, Black Books, Bill Hicks, Daniel Kitson, Dylan Moran, Phoenix Nights, Family Guy, Futurama, People Like Us, Operation: Good Guys, Help, This is Spinal Tap, Best In Show, The Office, Peep Show, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Monty Python's various guises and any misfortune befalling June Sarpong or Jane Middlemiss.

you have exceptional taste, thanks for reminding me of all the good stuff i forgot... i spent a very stoned evening watching the whole of Darkplace the other day, a vastly underrated show if ever there was one.

LasagneOfDoom- 04-13-2005
Yes yes, a lot of brilliant stuff being mentioned here. Bill Bailey had me laughing pretty hard lately, great in Black Books it has to be said but his stand-up stuff is top notch as well. Also: Ross Noble gets a special mention from my corner too. One of the funniest, most random Brit comedians of recent years.

Blackadder and Red Dwarf haven't been mentioned yet I notice, maybe we're not geeky enough here. Hell, they've made me laugh before, Not The Nine 'o' clock news too. And Fry and Laurie as Jeeves and Wooster, perfect casting if ever it existed. David Cross is a rather good American comic who isn't too well known here, an appearance on Radio 4 was as prominent as he got. Bremner, Bird and Fortune has its moments.

I actually forgot to put both in my typing madness.

When Fist of Fun was mentioned, it rang some bells. Then a scraggly Peter Baynham popped into my head, telling me how to make an action man with a milk carton and some balloons. Genius. I looked about and there's no DVD, and none planned. However I believe both series are available for download from that super exclusive BitTorrent place UKNova. Sadly it has a maximum user allowance of 75k so I couldn't join. I have to wait for someone to be deleted then jump in. Searching for Fist of Fun on Limewire isn't advised.

Earls- 04-15-2005
Fry & Laurie not just perfect casting for Jeeves & Wooster; A Bit Of Fry & Laurie the sketch show was fantastic too. Surely merits all three series being on DVD by the time I finish typing th...Oh, cripes, I've left the iron on.

TylerDurden- 04-16-2005
A revivial for Fist of Fun and Newman & Baddiel In Pieces on DVD)?!? It'll never happen - come on, Season Two of Twin Peaks has yet to be released in this country, when Little Britain is a rapid-fire seller.

If you have a sense of humour above fart gags, it seems the best option is to emigrate. Or get a multi-region.

multi-region

I just recently got an import of 'A Mighty Wind', which is the "folk" Spinal Tap, starring the three leads of that film as a folk group who were big in the 60s, and featuring a couple of other groups too. Anyway - it's not as hilarious as Tap, but has some brilliant moments, and it's very affectionately done. There's a couple of really lovely songs too!

staticqueen- 04-17-2005
I know we mentioned this on the last forum thing, but its so good it has to be done again: I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue still stands up as one of my favourite all time funny things.

TylerDurden- 04-18-2005
All those Top 100 lists - I find it hilarious that Oasis are considered to have had two classic albums compared to Jimi Hendrix's one, and that the likes of London Calling and Never Mind The Bollocks aren't as great as fucking Coldplay.

What am I listening to right now? Musical Ignorance...
